Let's get real about something that's affecting many of us right now - political stress. With Project 2025 looming and anti-LGBTQ+ legislation popping up like unwanted Instagram ads, many of us are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, and straight-up exhausted. Some of us have been through it all before and have figured out how to weather the storm. For others, like the Covid era new late-in-life lesbians and baby gays, it may be the first time you and your relationship are feeling personally under attack. So grab your favorite comfort beverage, and let's talk about how to stay sane when the world feels a bit too much.

First Things First: Your Feelings Are Valid AF

That knot in your stomach when you see another anti-LGBTQ+ bill? That rage when politicians use our lives as talking points? That anxiety about the future? All of it is valid. You're not being "too sensitive" or "overreacting." These are natural responses to real threats to our community.

The News & Social Media Situation

Let's be honest - doom scrolling isn't doing us any favors. Here's how to stay informed without losing your mind:

1.      Set Boundaries Like a Boss

·         Pick specific times to check news (maybe not right before bed!)

·         Choose 2-3 reliable news sources and stick to them

·         Use app timers for social media

·         Create "no news" zones in your life (like your bedroom or during meals)

2.      Curate Your Feed

·         Follow accounts that balance awareness with hope

·         Mix in plenty of queer joy and sapphic content

·         Don't feel guilty about unfollowing or muting anxiety-inducing accounts

·         Create a separate "politics" Twitter/Instagram account if needed

Self-Care Isn't Selfish - It's Survival

Here's what real self-care looks like in these times:

1.      Physical Care

·         Move your body in ways that feel good

·         Get enough sleep (yes, even if there's breaking news)

·         Eat regular meals (stress snacking only, while valid, isn't a meal plan)

·         Stay hydrated (and no, coffee doesn't count as water!)

2.      Mental Health Moves

·         Try queer-centered meditation apps or YouTube channels

·         Journal your feelings (rage writing is totally therapeutic)

·         Practice grounding techniques when anxiety hits

·         Set aside time for activities that bring you joy

Finding Your People

Community connection is our superpower! Here's how to tap into it:

1.      Online Spaces

·         Join LGBTQ+ Discord servers

·         Find Facebook groups for local queer community updates

·         Follow sapphic creators who discuss political issues thoughtfully

·         Jump into Sapphic Savvy's chat

2.      IRL Connection

·         Attend local LGBTQ+ community meetings

·         Join queer sports leagues or hobby groups

·         Find or start a queer book club

·         Connect with LGBTQ+ political action groups

Turning Anxiety into Action (When You Have the Energy)

Sometimes doing something about it helps us feel less powerless:

1.      Small Actions Count

·         Register to vote and help others do the same

·         Share reliable information about LGBTQ+ rights

·         Support queer-owned businesses

·         Donate to LGBTQ+ organizations (even $5 helps!)

·         Contact your congressional reps and senators- did you know you can even automate this so it only takes you like 30 seconds? Check out Resist.bot !

2.      Bigger Moves (Energy Permitting)

·         Volunteer with local LGBTQ+ organizations

·         Attend city council meetings

·         Help organize community events

Remember: You're Not Alone

Our community has faced challenges before, and we're still here, still queer, and still fabulous. When times get tough, remember:

·         You're part of a resilient community

·         Progress isn't always linear, but it is persistent

·         Small acts of resistance matter

·         Taking care of yourself is a form of protest

The Bottom Line

Political stress is real, and as Sapphics, we're feeling it extra hard right now. But remember - you don't have to carry this weight alone. Take breaks when you need them, lean on your community, and don't forget to celebrate the joy in your life alongside fighting the good fight.

Stay strong, stay connected, and most importantly, stay true to yourself. We've got this! 🌈✊💖
